Why the Obsession with Weight?

I did a quick internet search to try and find out how long we have been weighing ourselves. The answer proved elusive, but I did get inundated with references to both why we should and why we should not weigh ourselves daily. What IS it about weight and kilograms that has gotten our society so obsessed..?!
Think about it - why might you want to lose weight?    For health reasons? In that case, why not directly measure the relevant medical parameters?   Or perhaps for improved mobility? In that case you would do better to directly monitor your mobility (e.g. how easily you can tie your shoe laces, or how comfortably you can climb a particular set of stairs).    Or is it simply for aesthetics? If that is the case, then rather keep track of your shape. Your belt buckle is not only a more direct measure of this, but also a more reliable measure of progress generally. In contrast to to weight, it will change much more predictably in response to healthy lifestyle changes. (Think about the number of times that you have been disappointed by the scale not reflecting the efforts that you have put in…)   So why indeed are we so obsessed with weight? Perhaps simply, because it is easy to measure and to some extent relates to all three of the motives health, mobility and aesthetics. The problem however lies in the phrase ‘to some extent’, which is further compounded by our society having firmly entrenched a direct - albeit far-fetched - link between weight and self worth.   Ultimately though, it’s not about whether or not you weigh yourself - it’s what you do with the information that really matters. If you see it for what it is - an indicator of a very general and often unpredictable nature - then that’s fine. If however you use it destructively to draw simplistic conclusions about yourself or your progress, then I would suggest you rather quit weighing yourself entirely.
